Patrick Carrigan hip drop tackle, Kevin Walters, Brisbane Broncos vs Wests Tigers, Round 20

Broncos lock Patrick Carrigan has been referred straight to the NRL judiciary for his hip drop tackle on Tigers counterpart Jackson Hastings.

The incident in the 73rd minute of the Tigers’ 32-18 win over the Broncos on Saturday night saw Carrigan twist Hastings and land on the back of his ankle, which resulted in him hobbling off with a potential season-ending injury.

The star forward was put on report and on Sunday morning learned he’ll be fronting the judiciary on Tuesday night.

“They are blowing up about something that has happened in the tackle,” Michael Ennis said on Fox League.

“That is a hip drop tackle where he just puts his body weight on the back ankle of Hastings.

“It is not a good one from Carrigan.”

A grade two charge carries a two week suspension and Greg Alexander believes Carrigan is facing time on the sidelines.

“I think he is in some hot water,” Alexander said.

“It is a hip drop. He swung his body around and landed on the back of the ankle there of Hastings.

“Unfortunately for Hastings the players over the top twisted him backwards so it all worked against him.

“But Patrick Carrigan certainly played his part and that was a hip drop there is no two ways about it.”

Cooper Cronk agreed that the tackle matched the description of a hip drop and Carrigan is looking at a suspension.

“That’s a hip drop and he is in some trouble,” Cronk said.

“I’ve got no idea what that will be, but he is in some trouble and he will have to face the judiciary.”

Broncos coach Walters played down the incident post match and was of the belief that any offense from Carrigan was accidental.

“I don’t know if he snapped his ankle,” Walters said.

“I guess that is a heat of the battle thing. We will let the match review committee look at that. He is obviously on report.

“But knowing Pat Carrigan, a person of his character I wouldn’t have thought there was anything intentional there. It is just in the heat of the battle.”

However, Tigers coach Brett Kimmorley was much more scathing of Carrigan’s tackle.

“I thought the tackle was a pretty ordinary tackle,” Kimmorley said.

“It is something that has crept into the game a little bit and it needs to be looked after because it’s a horrendous tackle and the outcome can be really bad.”
