Australian music royalty Kasey Chambers has captivated audiences with a powerful cover of Eminem’s Lose Yourself.
The track was a monster hit for the rap God in 2002 where it was the lead single on the soundtrack for the big screen movie 8 Mile. It is regarded as one of the greatest hip hop songs ever.
There’s awards to back up that claim too, with the track scooping an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy for Best Rap Song.
Chambers is an ARIA hall of famer and the singer-songwriter showed she was well adept at adjusting to a track outside of her country music wheelhouse.
A clip of Chambers’ performance – captured at Newcastle’s Civic Theater last month as part of her Behind the Barricades tour – hit YouTube overnight.
It shows her build slowly before delivering a knockout finish to wrap the eight-minute cover.
“This just BLEW ME AWAY!!! I had chills the whole time. Toward the end, I was on my feet,” one person commented.
Another described it as “incredible”.
“Definitely cover of the year. This bluesy number makes your hair stand up. Her voice has never sounded as good as this,” they said.
A third said it felt “like I was dragged through a field of thorns and barbed wire… loved every moment”.
While the cover may surprise, Chambers said Eminem was actually one of her favorite songwriters.
“Eminem makes me feel things when I hear him. Not always the most comfortable things but I’m not sure that music is always meant to make us feel comfortable,” she said, according to Music Feeds.
