Johor govt announces RM300,000 allocation for historic JB church
JOHOR BARU: The Johor government has given a RM300,000 allocation to the Church of the Immaculate Conception Johor Baru for repairs and upgrades, says Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
“The church was built in 1883 and is one of the oldest buildings in Johor Baru and has high heritage and historical value,” said the Johor Mentri Besar.
“I hope the funds can help to improve its infrastructure and provide a more comfortable house of worship for the congregation,” he added when visiting the church on Thursday (Oct 27).
Onn Hafiz is the first Johor mentri besar to visit the church in its 139-year history.
He was received by the church’s multi-racial congregation during his visit and he praised the house of worship for practicing inclusivity.
“I am happy to be here and see people of various races coming together, including friends from Sabah and Sarawak,” said Onn Hafiz.
“This shows that we all need to set aside our differences and work as a family in the spirit of Bangsa Johor to develop the state,” he added in a speech.
Earlier, he also visited the Holy Light Presbyterian Church in Jalan Gertak Merah and announced an allocation of RM100,000 to repair its basketball court.
