GE15: Tebrau candidate fears for team’s safety after ‘road bully’ incident
JOHOR BARU: Another candidate vying for the parliamentary seat in Johor has been hit with an unwanted incident during the campaigning period.
Barisan Nasional’s Tebrau candidate Datuk Nicole Wong said that three of her contractors who were tasked to put up a billboard were injured after being hit by a car.
“The contractors were putting up a billboard near Taman Austin Heights and had parked their car at the side of the road.
“Out of nowhere, another car came and hit their car from the back. To avoid any unwanted incident, they drove away and left the site but were chased by the other car.
“The other car then hit them again for the second time. Fearing for their lives, the contractors then decided to stop and run away to hide. They hid in the bushes nearby for about 15 minutes,” she told a press conference here.
Wong, who is also MCA Youth chief, said that she was upset by the incident and was also worried about the safety of her team.
“Vandalising posters and flags may be normal during elections, though I definitely don’t condone it but this is too much.
“It involved people’s lives. I am worried about my team and volunteers as I do not want anything bad to happen to them. Their lives are as important as mine,” she said.
She added that while the incident has not wavered her spirit to continue campaigning, she is sad that people who are helping her had to go through such a scary encounter.
“It is unfair as they are just doing their jobs. Instead of resorting to such attacks, we should work on our policies for the people,” she said.
She noted that the contractors have filed a police report and that she will also be filing another report.
“I really hope that this does not happen again to me or any other candidates,” she said.
When contacted, Johor Baru OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat confirmed receiving a report on the incident and that investigations are ongoing.
