FPL injury news: Erling Haaland update, Man Utd trio latest, Ben Chilwell confirmation | Football | Sport
Plenty of FPL managers will have decisions to make ahead of Saturday’s deadline, which is a later time this week at 1.30pm. Even captaincy, which this campaign has so often been an afterthought due to the performances of Manchester City star Erling Haaland, is a debate as the Norwegian is a doubt to face Fulham.
Haaland, who has 17 Premier League goals in 11 appearances, has missed his side’s last two fixtures in the 1-0 win away to Leicester and the 3-1 Champions League win over Sevilla in midweek. Julian Alvarez started up front in both games, and himself could be an intriguing option if Haaland is ruled out, though Pep Guardiola did not indicate whether he would be available to start.
“He is much better – we will decide today [if he can play tomorrow],” Guardiola said on Friday. “It’s a good step to start training. [We must consider] himself, his opinion, the doctor’s opinion. If it’s 90 minutes or just fewer minutes, we will see after training.”
There is an argument to be made over whether to sell Haaland if managers believe that he won’t start, with only two league games remaining before the World Cup break. However with the 22-year-old close to making the Fulham game, he is therefore likely to start next week against Brentford, where he will be the most captained player in the game.
However there is an opportunity to downgrade Haaland in order to fund a move for Kevin De Bruyne this week, who will be a popular captain after his free-kick sealed all three points in an 11-pointer last time out. Phil Foden is another popular Manchester City asset, but has been on the bench in the last two league games.
Manchester United options have been gaining popularity as Erik ten Hag’s side have shown impressive form as of late, though the availability of three attacking options are still in question. Antony, Jadon Sancho and Antony Martial are all capable of scoring, but the Dutch boss left them out of the travelling party to face Real Sociedad and the trio are doubts to face Aston Villa.
“It’s difficult to say in this moment,” Ten Hag said regarding Antony, Sancho and Martial. “I have to talk with the medical and the performance team as they did a programme in Manchester. I have to hear how their progress was and if they can be available for Sunday’s match.”
Ben Chilwell has been a popular asset in recent years due to his ability to get forward from a wing-back role, though a hamstring injury almost certainly has ruled the England man out of Chelsea’s final two games and his World Cup participation is also a doubt.
“He’s going for a scan later this afternoon so we’ll find out how he is then and there will be an update tomorrow,” Graham Potter said on Friday. “He feels ok but aware of the injury. We need to let the swelling settle down, hence the delay of the scan. We’ll know after that.”
