Deepavali break: Traffic under control on major roads in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Traffic was reported to be smooth and under control on major roads and highways in Penang ahead of Deepavali, say police.

“So far, despite many vehicles coming into the city centre here, the traffic is smooth and no heavy congestion has been reported,” George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said when contacted on Saturday (Oct 22).

ACP Soffian, however, said the public are advised to be more responsible on the road by parking at the designated lots and not to park haphazardly or at the road shoulder to avoid congestion.

He said the public should also adhere to the traffic rules and to obey instructions from the police on duty and be more courteous while driving.

Traffic, especially areas near Little India, was reduced to a crawl as the Indian community made their way to shops for last-minute Deepavali shopping.

Checks by The Star revealed several main roads such as at Greenlane saw vehicles moving slowly towards the city centre.

Slow-moving vehicles were also reported at Penang Bridge during lunch hour and Sungai Dua to Juru at about 2.30pm.

Deepavali falls on Monday (Oct 24).
