Agbonlahor says Liverpool should send 20-year-old out on loan
Fabio Carvalho isn’t ready to play for Liverpool and should be looking to find himself a loan move.
That’s according to TalkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor. Speaking after Liverpool’s terrible 1-0 loss against Nottingham Forest yesterday, the pundit suggested that the 20-year-old isn’t at the required level right now.
“Liverpool, where do you start?” sighed Agbonlahor. “For me, first of all, Carvalho doesn’t look like Premier League quality. He looks like he needs another season out on loan, doesn’t look ready.”
The former England striker went on to give his assessment of Liverpool’s individual struggles against Forest.
“Fabinho’s legs have gone. His idea of a sprint is a walk at the moment. Firmino, inconsistent, Salah was poor today and Gomez, two decent games and everyone’s saying he can fill in for Kyle Walker. Today he was awful again, so Liverpool have got a lot of problems,” Agbonlahor mused.
Carvalho misses chance for big moment against Forest
It’s probably a little harsh on Carvalho this. As usual, there were some flashes of quality from the young man, but not enough end product.
He perhaps should have scored early into the game after a beautiful touch sent him through on goal. Instead of striking the ball with his weaker left foot though, he prodded a tame effort straight at Dean Henderson.
Had that gone in, the whole game could have been different. As it was, Carvalho never got another clear sight of goal and faded badly before coming off for Jordan Henderson.
That meant that the Reds No.28 is still yet to complete 90 minutes in the Premier League for Liverpool.
As a young player still, that isn’t particularly surprising. But having started four games so far, he might be disappointed at having been hooked every time.
Still, Carvalho has played a part in all but one of Liverpool’s 11 games this season. That’s potentially more than a lot of fans had expected so early into the campaign.
Injuries are a big cause of that, but it also must be acknowledged that the youngster has had his moments.
A lovely finish against Bournemouth was followed up by a dramatic winner against Newcastle. In the early weeks of the season he was a real bright spot. So, it feels wrong to write Fabio off just yet. But more could certainly be expected as he grows into the side.
