11-year-old boy dies in tragic goal post incident at Sabah school

KOTA KINABALU: A Primary Five pupil tragically died after the crossbar of a goal post fell on top of him during a sporting event at a school in Manggatal, near here on Thursday (Oct 20).

The 11-year-old was confirmed to have died at the Likas Hospital following the 12.20pm incident.

Kota Kinabalu OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said the boy’s father, believed to be in his 50s, was present at the annual sports fair at SJK(C) Lok Yuk when he noticed pupils gathering in a group and making a commotion on the field.

He said the man approached the group and only then noticed his son was lying on the ground.

“The victim was rushed to the Likas Hospital in an ambulance after a teacher at the location called the MERS-999 number.

“However, the boy was confirmed to have died due to serious head injuries after the crossbar fell on him,” he said in a statement on Friday (Oct 21).

ACP Mohd Zaidi said their investigations found that there was no foul play involved, adding the case has been classified as a sudden death report (SDR).

The incident had gone viral on social media after a video of paramedics and policemen attending to the victim was posted online on Thursday.

The 14-second clip showed the boy being put on a stretcher and carried off into the waiting ambulance.

Meanwhile, police are also investigating a viral video where a suspected drunken man assaulted a woman at a traffic light junction near a shopping mall here.

ACP Mohd Zaidi said the incident was said to have taken place at 9pm on Oct 18.

He said the woman had just finished work at a nearby restaurant and was heading to the mall when the incident took place.

“The suspect, who is believed to be under the influence, suddenly punched the woman on her right ear and also got into an altercation with a man who attempted to help the woman,” he said.
