The first search engine Archie appeared in 1989. It was created by the Canadian student Alan Emtage. It was oriented on the creation of the base which included names of the files placed on the public ftp servers. It was massive and not handy, and also it needed much network resourses.

But the first step was made. On the next 6 years many students who studied computer science created the search robots. That time Excite, World Wide Web Wanderer and Web Crawler appeared. But the new unique approach was embodied in search engine Alta Vista. The search process was made using few keywords or a phrase. Among new features of it were the search of video, audio files and also pictures.

In 1989 Yahoo began to serve as a search engine (before this time it was only the catalogue of links). Also in 1989 Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the future founders of Google, began to interest in search engines. They supposed search engines can be an additional instrument to their main project management tool. The beta version of the Google was released only in the Autumn of 1998.

From that time Google and Yahoo and also other search engines – Live Search, Yandex, Rambler which appeared later, have been significantly improved, became smarter and handy. They are daily used by billions of people! Today we have no need to visit libraries if we need to get some information or even to use encyclopaedias we have at home.

In addition many revolutionaly instruments have been released which we couldn’t even imagine 10 years ago. Some of them (with an exception of standard online services just like an e-mail, RSS, instant messaging and others) make our everyday life ‘usual’. The SEO (search engine optimization) service has also became needed.

Let’s observe the two very important and useful services – Google Flu Trends and Flu Tracker. They both allow to monitor a season epidemic potential.

Do you interested in entertaining services, don’t you? For example, the Google Maps service is worth spending a couple of hours. Probably in the near future you will be able to make somebody surprise with a knowledge of different places on the planet.
